Welcome from Rev. Sara Ascher

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church. I hope that you are finding our worship to touch your hearts, minds and souls; our community inviting and warm; and our programs interesting and enjoyable.

If you have visited Unitarian Universalist churches before you will know that each congregation is unique, with its’ own personality and flavor.

If this is the first Unitarian Universalist church you have attended let me share with you what you might find different to other religious communities you may have visited. Unitarian Universalism is a religious tradition that allows for freedom of belief and religious expression. Though we have our roots in the Judeo-Christian tradition, we are not exclusively Christian and intentionally look to the faiths around the world to seek religious truth and understanding. The history of Unitarian Universalism is rich and varied with people fighting for freedom and speaking out what they believed. The BUUC continues that tradition. We are a community that allows for differing thoughts and beliefs and value all voices as important.

“The Mission of the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church is to support and promote the principles of Unitarian Universalism. It is to inspire lives of passion, compassion and community. We nurture spirituality, intellectual growth, diversity of belief, and our ties to one another. We do this for ourselves and for the larger world.” *

We at the BUUC are a vibrant and energized congregation. There is much going on in our community and I hope that you find many things that interest you. Our church year (currently meeting September through June) holds many special services and events that I urge you to attend. You will find enclosed in this packet detailed information on the number of committees, programs and events of the BUUC, but I shall highlight a few here for you.

Our Worship Committee works as a partner with me in planning and providing worship throughout the year. Their hard work helps to assure that on the Sundays that I am not in the pulpit there is thought-provoking and meaningful worship. One of the most unique elements of the BUUC is the frequent lay-member participation in worship, which includes our children. Whether as readers or worship leaders or as preachers, we are always finding ways to invite the members who wish a chance to share in providing worship to the congregation. The pulpit is not reserved solely for the minister, but open to members of the congregation to share their thoughts, beliefs and views of the world and religion.

Our Religious Education Program is active and a essential part of the larger congregation. The voices of our children are of equal importance to the community as are the voices of the adults and so we work hard to instill in the kids a sense that this is their church as much as it is any adults’.

Music is another vital part of our community. Our choir sings twice a month and though made up of largely non-professional volunteer singers, their sound and talent is simply outstanding. They are not to be missed.

You will find information on much more in the packet that will give you a greater sense of who we are and what we do. But if you have any questions regarding our church community or Unitarian Universalism please don’t hesitate to be in touch with me.

Again, welcome! I hope that you find here the religious home you are seeking and a community in which you find friendship and kindred spirits.

Blessings,
Rev. Sara Ascher
