The Women’s Alliance of the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church
History: The Women’s Alliance of the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church has roots back to the 1850’s. It was founded in 1859 and was called the Unitarian Sewing Circle. The members “met every two weeks, paid 5 cents dues, made shirts for 75 cents, tied quilts for 25 cents and sewed for poor families.” There were many name changes from Ladies Social Society to Women’s Auxiliary Society to Ladies Charitable Society and finally in 1907 to The Women’s Alliance. This name change to an Alliance was based on the women’s desire to incorporate the religious and denominational work of the National Alliance of the UUA. The function and purpose have remained essentially the same throughout the years.
Purpose: To serve the social and spiritual needs of women through fellowship, group expression, and programs of education, service, and community and to serve the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church (BUUC), the greater Brookfield community, and ourselves.
Membership: The Women’s Alliance serves as a separate entity from the other BUUC committees. We expand our service beyond the BUUC community and open our membership to those not part of the BUUC community. Therefore, it is not necessary to be a BUUC member to be involved in the Women’s Alliance.
Meetings: We meet once a month on the second Wednesday of each month during the church year. Meetings are held either at the church, at member’s homes and on occasion at local restaurants.
Silent Auction: Annually, the members of the Women’s Alliance hold a Goods & Services Silent Auction in the spring. This is our major fundraiser and is a fun and profitable evening.
Charitable Actions: The Women’s Alliance regularly gives contributions to local charities and selected members of the BUUC during the holiday season. We continue to contribute to capital projects of the BUUC as well as relief efforts worldwide. For example, recent contributions include funding for the repair of the BUUC tower, monetary donations to the BUUC Holiday and Spring special offerings, donations to the tri-town Domestic Violence Task Force, Abby House, Cat Connection, Toys for Joy, and the UUA Children’s Choir. Members of the Alliance also regularly donate their time for setup and cleanup along with baked goods for memorial services held at the BUUC.
